Building on its position among Autobytel’s “Best-looking SUVS of 2012,” the 2013 Infiniti FX is on sale now and showcases a new engine, new technology, and a new starting price of $44,300. That represents about a 1.3 percent bump over the entry point of the 2012 FX, but since the 2013 model gains a 7.3 percent increase in horsepower, we can call it a wash—and predict the 2013 Infiniti FX line will continue to clean up against the competition.
2013 Infiniti FX: Powered Up The entry FX also gains a new moniker—the FX37—which tells you what’s going on here: Infiniti swapped out the 3.5-liter V6 of the 2012 FX35 and installed an advanced 3.7-liter engine with a similar number of cylinders but an additional 22 hp, 5 more lb.-ft. of torque, and even a slight boost to the vehicle’s EPA marks. The FX35 was capable of reaching 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined, but the bigger, more powerful V6 in the FX37—with 325 hp and 267 lb.-ft. of twisting power—enables a line of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.
Needless to say, there’s plenty of technological assistance involved in producing that kind of performance, including Infiniti’s Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL) system, continuously variable valve timing, an electronically controlled throttle, and a seven-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode, Downshift Rev Matching, and Adaptive Shift Control.
And while we’re on the subject of technologies, the 2013 Infiniti FX also debuts another new one, the company’s next-gen Around View Monitor (providing an integrated 360-degree view of the area immediately surrounding the FX) with Moving Object Detection. The latter enhancement can detect and alert the driver to nearby moving objects that might otherwise go unnoticed when reversing out of a parking space, for example.
