With new entries like the Ford Focus ST, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ joining mainstays like the MINI Cooper, VW GTI and Honda Civic Si, U.S. drivers can choose from a growing number of vehicles that offer relatively high performance at a relatively low price. And those choices will soon include the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, slated to reach dealerships with a price tag that starts at $21,950 for models with a six-speed manual transmission or $22,950 when packing Hyundai’s six-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission.

“The Turbo further broadens Veloster’s hero role in the Hyundai lineup to attract our next generation of buyers,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president for product and corporate planning at Hyundai Motor America. “It’s powerful, high-tech and fuel-efficient, attributes which we think make Veloster Turbo the ultimate innovation in the sport coupe segment.”

Also, along with announcing price points for the Veloster Turbo, Hyundai revealed that the naturally aspirated Veloster models would see slight increases for the 2013 model year. With a six-speed DIY transmission, the Veloster will have an MSRP of $17,450 and, when configured with a six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch automatic, the base price will be $18,700; both MSRPs reflect $150 increases over 2012.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo: The Substance

The Veloster Turbo starts with the same advanced powerplant as the Veloster proper—a 1.6-liter I4 engine with direct injection and dual-continuously variable valve timing. But then Hyundai engineers bolted on a twin-scroll turbocharger to dial up 201 hp and 195 lb.-ft. of torque; it’s a horsepower boost of more than 45 percent to go with over 58 percent more torque. Of course, the Veloster Turbo also sports both steering and suspension upgrades to help drivers take advantage of that added motivation.

In addition to benefiting from variable-effort, sport-tuned electric power steering, the high-velocity Veloster rides on a suspension that features McPherson struts out front, backed by coil springs, gas shocks and a 24-mm stabilizer bar; the rear suspension is the first from Hyundai to rely on a V-torsion beam setup, and boasts a 23-mm stabilizer bar and monotube shocks. The Veloster Turbo also gets grippy Kumho Solus KH25 215/40R18 85V tires.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, since it is a Hyundai product, the Veloster Turbo performs well with the EPA, too. In fact, it can achieve best-in-class fuel-economy numbers of up to 26 mpg city/38 mpg highway (in manually transmissioned models).

2013 Hyundai Veloster: The Style

Yes, the hidden passenger-side third-door remains to provide easy rear-seat access, but there won’t be any confusing the Veloster Turbo with its traditionally powered sibling, particularly when viewed from the front. There, the Veloster Turbo features a massive, much more prominent widemouth-style grille that’s accented by LED character lighting and round front foglamps. Continuing to the rear of the car, drivers will find dual exhaust tips, a revised lower rear fascia that showcases rear diffuser vents, and a new rear bumper. Model-specific 18-inch alloy wheels (with chrome inserts) and Hyundai’s first available matte exterior finish—a sophisticated Matte Gray—provide the finishing touches.

There also are enhancements a-plenty to the Veloster Turbo’s interior. Heated front sport seats with driver’s side lumbar support help keep the butts where they belong while the Veloster Turbo is kicking those of its rivals, and a special electroluminescent gauge cluster with two interactive TFT (thin-film transistor) screens are on tap to provide a constant flow of vehicle information to the pilot. Pushbutton start, alloy pedals, and “Turbo” embroidery are all in the mix as well.
