Performance: 2013 Hyundai Veloster
The Veloster's base 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine returns for the 2013 model year. Output comes in at 138 horsepower and 132 lb-ft. of torque. Paired to a six-speed manual transmission, drivers can expect to earn 28 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway (32 mpg combined). A six-speed automated manual transmission is also available. Tweaks to the automated transmission deliver improved fuel figures over last year (29 mpg in the city, 40 mpg highway, 33 mpg combined).
With a zero-to-60 mph speed of around 9.5 seconds, the Veloster's base engine may leave some car shoppers wanting more. To accommodate these people, Hyundai introduces a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that boosts performance to 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft. of torque. This lifts zero-to-60 mph time down to below eight seconds. Fuel efficiency for a Veloster Turbo with manual transmission is listed at 26 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway (30 mpg combined).
