First Look: 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

recently debuted the 2011 Hyundai Sonata at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. Along with news of releasing a high-performance turbocharged model of the Sonata sedan, Hyundai also re-confirmed plans to introduce a Sonata hybrid for the 2011 model year.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata will be all new, complete with freshened styling and upgraded features. Smaller, more fuel-efficient engines across the vehicle's lineup are intended to set the mid-size sedan apart from more popular options such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Appearance

As Hyundai explained in a press release, the design of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was based on a Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy that resulted in a silhouette that is "long, light and low." A unique rear third window punctuates the long roofline and the entire appearance of the car is meant to insinuate a slant towards luxury. Notable examples of this include the bold chrome grille and open, flow-through interior design.

The smart exterior styling results in substantial interior cabin volume. At 120.2 cubic feet, the 2011 Sonata Hybrid will be roomier than nearly all of its main competitors. Hyundai is also quick to point out that the new Sonata will offer 16.4 cubic feet of trunk space, which is 9.3 percent larger than the Toyota Camry and 17.1 percent larger than the Honda Accord.

2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Powertrain and Performance

Traditional gas engine options for the 2011 Hyundai Sonata will include a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection GDI Theta II base powertrain and a turbocharged 2.0-liter Theta engine that also delivers direct-injection.

For the hybrid model, Hyundai plans to mate the base 2.4-liter engine to an electric engine and lithium-polymer battery pack. The gasoline powerplant is rated at 198 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque. More details about the hybrid powertrain will be revealed at the 2010 New York Auto Show (April 2 to April 11).

The Sonata hybrid, which will be badged as the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Blue Drive, further reduces fuel consumption thanks sophisticated weight reduction technologies. The use of ultra-high-strength steel combined with weight reduction measures helps give the new hybrid an exceptional power-to-weight ratio.

Across the board for the 2011 Sonata lineup, Hyundai promises a fun drive. A four-wheel independent suspension system will be offered on the GLS and Limited models. The technology is intended to deliver a superiorly fluid drive and agile handling.

The base 2011 Hyundai Sonata will be released in early 2010. The Sonata Hybrid Blue Drive will hit dealerships later in the year.
