Hyundai Deploys Throttle Override on All Models

With the whole “unintended acceleration” hullabaloo quickly disappearing into ye olde rearview mirror, the U.S. government’s push to mandate throttle-override systems on all cars sold in this country seems to be on hold: There’s been much talk, but little action, and final approval of any rule, along with timing, remains up in the air—but not at Hyundai.

Beginning this month, the automaker has added the technology, which electronically cuts out power to the throttle as soon as the brake pedal is pressed, on all models sold in America. It brings some extra peace of mind for U.S. customers, along with the opportunity for Hyundai to trash-talk its rivals—many of which are considering the technology themselves.

While those folks have been considering, Hyundai said that its “development teams have been less concerned about final government mandate timing, focusing instead on the immediate safety and assurance of their customers.”
