Although the +200 mph top speed of the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been known for a while, we’ve finally gotten word on exactly what it takes to achieve that kind of blistering performance: A red-hot supercharged V8 engine that the SAE has now certified to produce 662 hp and 631 lb.-ft. of torque. And not only does that output out-shine any other production V8 on the market today, but—in typical Ford fashion—it also enables the new GT500 to achieve better fuel economy than any other vehicle in America with at least 550 hp.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 vs. Chevy Camaro ZL1
While the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 certainly offers more power than exotics priced hundreds of thousands of dollars above its own MSRP of $54,200, most Mustang fanatics are probably more interested in how this fast Ford stacks up against its crosstown rival, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The answer? Not very well.
Running the numbers here shows that, compared to the Camaro, the Shelby weighs some 270 lbs. less and has 82 more horsepower, an extra 75 lb.-ft. of torque and 5 more mpg on the highway. In fact, with an EPA line of 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway/18 mpg combined, the GT500 offers higher fuel-efficiency ratings than the Mustang GT was getting just four years ago.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500—All-around Performance
Of course, the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 is more about much more than just straight-line speed, as explained by Jamal Hameedi, chief engineer for Ford’s SVT high-performance group: “The engineers at Ford SVT focused on the fundamentals first with solid mechanical grip and strong brakes. On top of that platform they added advanced driver-adjustable electronic assist features including launch control, Bilstein adjustable damping, AdvanceTrac stability control and electric power-assisted steering.
“Our goal is to create outstanding all-around performance cars, not just stoplight-to-stoplight sprinters. We’ve backed up this amazing powerplant with a more refined chassis tuning that helps keep the rubber on the pavement without punishing the driver’s spine and six-pot Brembo brakes that dissipate speed with ease stop after stop.”
