The 2015 Ford Mustang has eight airbags including usual front and side protection. But one of those eight airbags is a bit special. On the passenger side, Ford has announced a new active glove box — a trick glove-compartment door which acts like a knee airbag by using a plastic bladder sandwiched between the inner and outer glove box door panels. If the vehicle is involved in an accident, the bladder fills up with air which in turn pushes out the outer panel to act as a safety buffer for the passenger.
“With this innovative airbag design, we have developed technology that provides protection for vehicle occupants while also reducing weight and enabling greater design flexibility," said Sean West, Ford restraints manager.
So why go with this unique system instead of a regular knee airbag? Ford says it comes down to weight and space. By using this design, Ford claims that the airbag is about 65 percent lighter while the inflator is 75 percent smaller than a conventional knee airbag inflator.
