Few vehicle redesigns have been as hotly anticipated in recent memory as that of the 2015 Ford Mustang.  The Ford Mustang has long been one of the most popular performance coupes on the market, and much of the interest in the next generation version of this car centered around the promise from the Blue Oval that its suspension, its drivetrains, and its interior would be thoroughly modernized.  Ford made good on its pledge, giving us the most complete Mustang ever to have left the factory and proving that in 2015 performance, efficiency, and affordability are not mutually exclusive.

Let's take a look at 10 things you need to know about the 2015 Ford Mustang.

01. The 2015 Ford Mustang Offers All-New Styling

The 2015 Ford Mustang has taken another step away from the retro styling cues that dominated the 2005 edition's sheet metal, but that doesn't mean that the coupe (and soon-to-be-convertible) has completely abandoned its design heritage.  A trio of tail lights with sequential turn signals can still be found at each side on the rear of the car, and the Ford Mustang's fastback styling is a classic nod to the original muscle car era.  The front deck, however, has been stretched and the nose of the Mustang has been broadened, giving it a sleek, athletic feel that wasn't as prominent in last year's model. The new Mustang also sits 1.4 inches lower than the 2014 edition, which helps to further accentuate its long lines.

02. The 2015 Ford Mustang Rides On A Redesigned Platform

The 2015 Ford Mustang's fresh styling sits on top of a heavily revised platform, and one that has grown in almost every single dimension except its 107.1-inch wheelbase.  1.5-inches wider than the vehicle it replaces, underneath the 2015 Ford Mustang's floor pan the car couldn't be more different.  Specifically, the Mustang has dropped its live rear axle in favor of an independent rear suspension that is much smoother and easier to drive in a performance setting.  The front end also features a new MacPherson strut with double-ball-joint suspension design that was specifically conceived to match with the independent rear setup.

03. The 2015 Ford Mustang Dramatically Upgrades Its Interior

The 2015 Ford Mustang has gone out of its way to make everyone forget that the entry-level version of this coupe once advertised a rather pedestrian passenger compartment.  The materials used throughout the cabin have been upgraded to softer plastics, shiny metals, and where possible, leather, and although some harder plastic does remain it's attenuated by the revised center stack, console, and gauge cluster that come with the new Ford Mustang.  The cabin is also larger than before, adding 3.5 cubic feet of passenger volume to sit at a total of 84.5 cubic feet, along with more room for front passengers at the hip, head, and leg measurements, and a slight increase in space for rear seat riders.

04. The 2015 Ford Mustang Introduces EcoBoost Power

For the first time since the SVO-badged cars of the early 80s, the Ford Mustang gains a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.  The 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost makes use of a new 2.3-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost turbo mill that debuted earlier this year as an option with the Lincoln MKC crossover.  Capable of generating 310 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, the Mustang EcoBoost can accelerate the coupe to 60-mph in a quick 5.2 seconds, and has been positioned as a new mid-tier engine option amongst the expanded drivetrain trio now offered by Ford.

05. The 2015 Ford Mustang Maintains A V-6 Engine Option

If the EcoBoost four-cylinder represents the mid-level engine choice, then whither the 2015 Ford Mustang V6?  Although the Ford Mustang V-6 is still available, like last year it remains the entry-level option for the fastback, a fate sealed by its status-quo 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft rating.  These are respectable numbers to be sure, but they aren't quite as flashy as those of the EcoBoost four-cylinder - and that's not the only pizzazz that the turbo Mustang has stolen from the V-6.  You can no longer order the Track Package with the six-cylinder car, not can you spec big wheels, sport seats, or even premium levels of equipment.  The Mustang V-6 has been put squarely into place as a base price leader designed to tempt people to step up to the slightly more expensive, but better-equipped (and quicker) EcoBoost edition.

06. The 2015 Ford Mustang GT Packs A 5.0 V-8

Of course, if sports car feel is your most important criteria when purchasing the 2015 Ford Mustang, then it makes sense to skip the line and go right to front with the Mustang GT.  The Ford Mustang GT's standard 5.0-liter V-8 engine has been massaged to provide an additional 15 ponies for 2015, which brings total output to 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque (the latter number representing a 10 lb-ft increase as well).  How did the engineers at Ford do it?  More lift for the 5.0's larger valves, as well as forged connecting rods and better breathing through a redesigned head as well as new exhaust headers, helping the car hit 60-mph from a standing start in just 4.5 seconds.

07. The 2015 Ford Mustang Provides Better, And Worse Fuel Efficiency

The 2015 Ford Mustang's engines aren't just powerful entries into the mid-size coupe world, but they're also fairly frugal at the fuel pump.  Perhaps unsurprisingly the Ford Mustang EcoBoost leads the pack with an EPA rating of 21-mpg in stop and go driving and 32-mpg on the highway, with the V-6 engine hot on its heels via a 19-mpg city and 28-mpg highway performance of its own.  Fans of the Mustang will note that the V-6 has dropped three miles per gallon in highway cruising, an unusual state of affairs which can most likely be blamed on more aggressive rear gearing for the car.  The 5.0-liter V-8 is the thirstiest of the three, posting 16-mpg around town and 25-mpg on the highway

08. The 2015 Ford Mustang Features Two Transmission Choices

The 2015 Ford Mustang doesn't make any break with tradition when it comes to transmission availability.  All three engines have the choice between a pair of gearboxes: a six-speed manual unit and a six-speed automatic.  Of note is the fact that for 2015 the Ford Mustang's six-speed autobox provides steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the first time in the history of the car.  Ford has given paddle shifter-equipped cars an automatic rev-matching feature that blips the throttle on downshifts for smoother transitions between one ratio and the next.  Hooligans will also appreciate the standard line-lock feature that comes with the Mustang GT that allows for smoky burnouts to be performed almost effortlessly with the front brakes engaged and the rear brakes safely on the sidelines.

09. The 2015 Ford Mustang Offers Improved Safety

The 2015 Ford Mustang isn't just quicker and more efficient than ever before, but it's also safer.  The coupe offers twice as many airbags as were available with the Mustang the year before (eight in total), including a new passenger-side knee airbag that's integrated into the glove box door for faster deployment in an accident.  The Ford Mustang also offers the availability of a blind spot monitoring system, and an adaptive cruise control system that integrates a collision warning system.  This type of active safety gear simply wasn't to be found on previous generations of the coupe.

10. The 2015 Ford Mustang Is Pricier Than Before

The 2015 Ford Mustang manages to stay affordable, but there's still a price gap between the new model and the 2014 edition of the coupe.  The entry-level Ford Mustang V-6 starts at an MSRP of $23,600, which is close to $1,500 more than last year's six-cylinder edition.  This differential is fairly consistent as one progresses through the line-up: while there's no real equivalent to the new Mustang EcoBoost (MSRP $25,170), the Mustang GT's $32,100 window sticker is about $1,000 more dear than the 2014 GT was.  Considering the additional performance, features, and safety that come with the redesigned Mustang, this seems like a small premium to pay for the latest and greatest pony car.
