2013 Ford Fusion Energi Summary
Changes for the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi:
A plug-in gas-electric hybrid version of the Fusion Hybrid, the 2013 Fusion Energi provides 21 miles of electric vehicle (EV) range, according to Ford, before switching over to standard gas-electric hybrid operation.
Ford offers the 2013 Fusion Energi in SE and Titanium trim levels. The Fusion Energi Titanium costs $1,400 more, and includes a premium touchpanel audio system, Sync Services technology, a reversing camera, rear parking assist sensors, and a keyless passive entry system with push-button ignition. This version of the car also adds interior and exterior styling upgrades.
Engines and Transmissions:
To create the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi, the automaker employs the same Atkinson-cycle 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine, 88 kW electric drive motor, continuously variable transmission (CVT), and regenerative braking system as the Fusion Hybrid. To give the car its 21-mile estimated EV driving range, the Fusion Hybrid’s 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is replaced by a larger, heavier, 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery that reduces the car’s trunk space from 12 cu.-ft. to 8.2 cu.-ft.
Using the charge port on the left front fender, the battery can be plugged into a standard household power outlet or an optional 240-volt quick-charger to provide the car with its maximum EV range. With the former, recharging takes 7 hours. With the latter, the battery tops off in 2.5 hours or less.
When the battery is depleted of electricity, the Fusion Energi switches to gas-electric hybrid operation. Ford claims this car can travel up to 620 miles on a full battery and a full gas tank. After that, the owner will need to pump unleaded gas into the car, or plug it in somewhere.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
Ford says the 2013 Fusion Energi will return 92 MPGe on the highway and 108 MPGe in the city, for an EPA-rated 100 MPGe in combined driving. When operated solely as a gas-electric hybrid, the Fusion Energi gets 44 mpg in the city, 41 mpg on the highway, and 43 mpg in combined driving.
Like other 2013 Fusion models, the Fusion Energi receives a “Top Safety Pick Plus” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a 5-star overall crash-test rating from the NHTSA.
In addition to its larger battery and plug-in capability, the Fusion Energi is equipped with a 5-year subscription to a MyFord Mobile smartphone application. Using this app, owners can find nearby charging stations, remotely check charging status, program charging for when energy rates are lower, pre-condition the cabin with heat or air conditioning before driving, find the car in a crowded parking lot, and more.
Like the Fusion Hybrid, the Fusion Energi includes a SmartGauge with EcoGuide display that encourages efficient driving. Additionally, this model offers Sync connectivity with 911 Assist, programmable MyKey settings, a MyFord Touch infotainment system, and an Active Park Assist system. Safety-related extras include lane departure and lane keep assist, blind-spot information, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and driver monitoring systems.
