    2004 Ford Explorer - XLT 4.0L (220A) 4x4

    Pros: drives nice

    Cons: quality

    Advice: buy a honda

The explorer is very nice to drive when it is not in the shop and I am afraid for when I don't have waranty. I have had transmission problems and engine problems. My 04 Explorer has now been in the shop a week and they can't figure out what is wrong w/the computer for the dash. It has a howl in the rear-end and the power windows in the back won't roll down.

    2004 Ford Explorer - XLT 4.6L (225A) 4x4

    Pros: rear split folding seat

    Cons: acceleration/shifting

Advice: Go buy a Chevy Dodge or Jeep

If you don't mind not being able to change lanes in traffic and having it in for service many times than this is the vehicle for you. There is about a 5 second delay when you floor it trying to make a move. By then your chance is gone. This is not a vehicle you want if you are towing either. The shifting gets even worse!!!!

    2004 Ford Explorer - XLS 4.0L (100A) 4x2

    Pros: quite ride

    Cons: rear end problems

Advice: don't, unless you want to buy mine!

I purchased my 2004 Explorer late in 2004. I had not heard about the rear end problems until too late. My Explorer has been worked on 5 times, just the rear end. Bearings replaced twice, leaked fluid and total replacement, then leaking fluid again. I have no problem with the local dealership, they work hard to repair each time and seem frustrated like me. It's like the parts are just junk, even new when replaced. Otherwise, it's pretty good, but not worth this kind of hastle.
