One sector of the automotive market that has been booming within the past couple of years are compact crossovers. They offer the practicality and SUV looks that many buyers are looking for. Ford’s entrant into this class is the 2013 Escape which went through a dramatic change for this year.

The new Escape trades in the rugged boxy style it has worn for the past two generations and goes for a sleek and smooth look. The design with its swoopy lines and sloping roofline is very reminiscent of some of Ford’s current products such as the Fusion and Focus. Inside, the Escape comes equipped with a load of technologies such as a trip computer, SYNC, MyFordTouch, and automatic rear tailgate that can be opened with the wave of your foot underneath the vehicle.

Under the hood are three different engines. They are as followed:

  • 2.5L Naturally-Aspirated Four-Cylinder: 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque
  • 1.6L Turbocharged EcoBoost Four-Cylinder: 178 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque
  • 2.0L Turbocharged EcoBoost Four-Cylinder: 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque

All engines use a six-speed automatic and can equipped with front or all-wheel drive.

Fuel Economy for the three engines are as followed:

  • 2.5L Naturally-Aspirated Four-Cylinder: 22 City/31 Highway/25 Combined
  • 1.6L Turbocharged EcoBoost Four-Cylinder: 23 City/33 Highway/26 Combined (FWD); 22 City/30 Highway/25 Combined (AWD)
  • 2.0L Turbocharged EcoBoost Four-Cylinder: 22 City/30 Highway/25 Combined (FWD); 21 City/28 Highway/24 Combined (AWD)

The 2013 Ford Escape starts at $22,470 for the base FWD S model and rises up to $32,120 for the AWD Titanium model. Competition for the Escape includes the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Volkswagen Tiguan.
