    2003 Ford Escape - XLT Premium (420B) 4x4

    Pros: The fold flat seats

    Cons: The steering wheel cover

    Advice: GET ONE!!

We test drove several SUV before deciding on the Escape. I absolutely love it. This is the first time owning an SUV and can't imagine going back to anything else. I love the way the Escape handles, I have taken it on many long trips, got it 1-1/2 months ago and it has 5,000 miles on it. The only complaint that I can come up with is the steering wheel; the bumpy cover on it leaves small blisters on my fingers, nothing that a cover won't fix! Otherwise it is a very comfortable ride! I highly recommend one to anyone in the market for a good/cheap SUV!

    2003 Ford Escape - XLT Popular 2 (400B) 4x4

Pros: Very peppy motor - car seems tight.

Cons: It stalls at normal speed which is a SIGNIFICANT SAFETY threat.

Advice: Don't buy until the stalling problem has been fixed.

With only 700 miles on the vehicle it stalled while my wife was driving on a curvy road going about 30 mph. She almost wrecked into oncoming traffic when the power assist brakes and steering was lost. She was really shaken up. This is a SIGNIFICANT safety issue and there appears to be a lot of history on the Escapes with the stalling problem - reference TSB 15589. It is in the dealer now but if they can't fix it, they better be willing to keep it. I cannot risk my families life. According to the forums, Ford says it's not a problem. I think if it stalls and causes injury or death, even a bad lawyer could win against Ford.

    2003 Ford Escape - XLT Popular 2 (400B) 4x4

Pros: Car like handling and off road capability

    Cons: Interior noise

Advice: Get the Escape with all the options you can afford!

First SUV we have ever owned and we are very pleased overall with the Escape! Drives really well on highways and the V6 has plenty of pep. Although not a true 4x4, it handled challenging beach sand dunes with no effort at all! Only complaints are that it has a 'fuel' smell to it after parking it for a few minutes and after almost two years the transmission seems to be making a funny noise. Great vehicle to drive and has plenty of space for cargo and extra passengers.

2003 Ford Escape - XLT Popular (300B) FWD

    Pros: the sound system

    Cons: the performance

    Advice: Don't buy an escape

Within the first 3 months i owned the ford escape my transmission failed twice (which ford finally replaced). My sunroof leaked during a rain storm and the escape had a computer failure while i was driving it causing it to stop dead. I have spent more time driving rental cars then I have actually driven the escape.
