Ford is looking to triple its electrified vehicle production capacity by 2013, and joining the all-electric Focus in the line-up will be the all-new 2013 Ford C-Max later this year. Available as both the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid and the 2013 Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid, this five-passenger family vehicle brings a whole new level of value and fuel efficiency to the market. With most of the official and/or projected information now available for the 2013 Ford C-Max line-up, we take a quick look at Ford's first-ever dedicated hybrid vehicle.
Since both versions of the 2013 Ford C-Max are varying degrees of gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles, all models share the same basic powertrain consisting of a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle inline-four, a hybrid eCVT and even the same electric motors; total system output for both models is 188 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque. The 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid and the 2013 Ford C-Max Energi are both produced in Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich. (alongside the Ford Focus), but read on to find out the unique differences between these two fuel-efficient cars. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems used in the 2013 C-Max will also be used in the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid and 2013 Ford Fusion Energi.

Set to go on sale this fall, the 2013 Ford C-Max Energi will have a starting MSRP of $32,950, and it is also expected to qualify for a $3,750 federal tax credit and even a $1,500 tax credit for California residents. Using Ford's retail website, we were able to configure a decked-out C-Max Energi, and it topped out at $37,930 including the panoramic sunroof, White Platinum exterior color and all of the tech goodies part of a $2,495 303A equipment group that includes navigation, hands-free power liftgate and active park assist
While the pricing alone for the Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid is only slightly more than the smaller Toyota Prius Plug-In, some of the stats for the plug-in C-Max are even more impressive. Ford claims that the C-Max Energi will have a miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) rating of 95 matching the plug-in Prius, but it is expected to have an all-electric driving range of 20 miles - almost doubling the Prius' 11-mile all-electric range. The C-Max Energi can be plugged into either a 120-volt outlet or a 240-volt charging station, but Ford has yet to release official charging times.
“The Ford C-MAX Energi is within financial reach for those who want a hybrid, but is also something customers will want to reach for because of its unique look and amazing value,” said Michael O’Brien, Ford electrified vehicle marketing manager. “It offers exceptional fuel economy, better features and a better price tag than a Prius plug-in hybrid, which we think will help make C-MAX Energi one of our most attractive vehicles for import customers.”

The hybrid system used on the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid doesn't allow a plug-in capability like the C-Max Energi, but it is still expected to return excellent fuel economy including a projected city rating of 47 miles per gallon - 3 mpg better than its closest competitor, the Toyota Prius V. The new Ford C-Max Hybrid is also priced better than the Prius V as well with a $25,200 starting price that undercuts its Toyota rival by $1,350. This price is for the C-Max Hybrid SE, but stepping up to the SEL trim level will increase the price to $28,200 and add in standard features such as leather seats, MyFord Touch and satellite radio. Like the C-Max Energi, we configured a 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid on Ford's website and were able to top it out at $33,625 including all of the same tech features on the Energi plus a remote start system.
