The is an electric car with a gasoline engine acting as a range extender, and it was first introduced at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. The car received high praise due to its combination of advanced technology, sporty looks and a luxurious interior. Available second half of 2010, the Fisker Karma has a starting price of $87,900.

The Karma operates in two modes controlled by paddles mounted on the back of the steering wheel. Stealth mode doesn’t hide the Karma from police radar, instead it switches to a quiet economy mode for optimized efficiency. In Sport mode, the Karma accesses the full power from the electric motors. Fisker claims the Karma will have a top speed of more than 125 mph with a 0-60 mph time of less than six seconds.

The Fisker Karma features an athletic and sleek design highlighted by the long hood and curvaceous fenders. Many design cues are also used to improve the Karma’s electric motor range. The roof contains a full-length solar panel to help recharge the batteries, while hiding behind the large 22-inch alloy wheels are regenerative brakes help to further recharge the batteries.

Inside, the Karma’s controls bear more than a slight resemblance to Motorola’s Razr phone. The two large gauges in the instrument cluster are easily visible through the three spoke sport steering wheel, with the large navigation screen acting as the centerpiece to the two-tone instrument panel. The Karma’s four-passenger cabin offers the highest levels of comfort, luxury and technology.

Assisting the electric motor, Fisker chose General Motors’ 2.0-liter Ecotec inline-4 as its range extender. This is the same engine found in the Chevrolet Cobalt SS and Chevrolet HHR SS.
