Mercedes-Benz revamps the C-Class lineup for 2006, tweaking the styling inside and out and replacing the engines and transmissions. Gone is the supercharged C230 and its “Kompressor” badge, replaced by an entry-level 201-horse, 2.5-liter V6 – though the C230 name remains. The mid-level model is now the C280 with a 3.0-liter V6 developing 228 horses. But the big news is the C350, with its 3.5-liter V6 and 20-percent bump in output to 268 horsepower. A seven-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the rear wheels, unless the C is equipped with 4-Matic all-wheel-drive, where a five-speed automatic with TouchShift manual control handles gear changing duties.
