OK, some will call me a heretic for this, but here goes: the '04 Honda Accord is a great car. It is not, however an excellent car, or a perfect car.
I've owned it 9 months now, and here are the highs and the lows:
HIGHS: V6 engine is simply stunning. It is seamlessly smooth, almost like an electric motor. Superb 5-speed automatic transmission always knows how to find the right gear. Effortless highway cruising -- you won't be tired out even after 500-600 miles of driving. The seats are awesome -- the most comfortable I have ever experienced. Instrumentation is top-notch, always readable at a glance. The HVAC system heats and cools very quickly. Quiet, smooth ride. Rommy interior -- it's really a full-size car. The styling is really almost avant garde for the class.
LOWS: Mushy handling -- too much body roll and needs better tires. Pronounced torque steer under hard acceleration. Niggling build quality problems such as squeaks, less than perfect fit for the headliner,jerky movement of power seats, and cheap carpeting. Confusing controls for the radio and HVAC. Somewhat of a gas hog in city driving. Tacky looking fake wood on the interior. Sunroof control hidden on dashboard in a really stupid place. Headlights not bright enough.
BOTTOM LINE: I don't think a person can go wrong with an Accord, but be smart and shop the choices. As I said, it IS a great car, but it is not an excellent car, not is it a perfect car. |
