keeping my fingers crossed on reliability--looks good in Consumer Reports since 2002 |
Advice to buyer: |
Wider 70 series tires are a necessity for handling.Consider the 4 cyl. engine/5 speed transmission |
Detailed review: |
I just purchased a 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport 4WD with the
4 cyl. engine/5 speed transmission--which is hard to find. I'm a stick shift driver who has fun at 3000-3500 rpm, and this wagon is fun to drive. But you must upgrade those narrow Wrangler ST tires (215/75-16s) to wider 235/70-16s, which I did easily at the Goodyear dealers(to their Fortera HLs, a much better tire). The result is much improved smoothness, cornering and road stability.I'm coming out of a two-seater sports car, and honestly enjoying the Jeep.Plenty of pep, and good gas mileage --21.5 mpg around suburbia the first tankful.Fit and finish are splendid. And I like the classic Jeep grille(very American)and high road visibility.
Unless you're pulling a trailer or large boat, my advice is to get a 4 cylinder/stick shift, have some fun and save money on gas vs the V6/automatic. That seems to be a big secret. And you can switch from 2WD to 4WD only when you need it. |
