If you like real trucks, you'll love the new 1999 Ford F-250 Super Duty pickups. These trucks are BIG: big dimensions, big V-10 engines, big tires, big comfortable interiors, a big step-in height on 4x4 models-- and big prices. Super Duty trucks are also beautiful; the styling is handsome in a rugged, masculine way. It's distinct from the Ford F-150 half-ton pickups. Super Duty trucks don't share any components with the F-150 platform.
Heavy duty towing and commercial applications are the prime uses of the new Super Duty Fords, but that doesn't mean the driver and passengers are neglected. The interiors are outstanding in all areas: roominess, comfort, visibility, ergonomics, sound insulation, versatility, and luxury features. All Super Cab (extended cabs) models have four doors. The two smaller reverse opening rear doors greatly increase accessibility. The rear bench seat can accommodate adults if the front seats aren't all the way back, and it's great for kids. The seat folds flat for cargo. Storage areas abound: the front doors have big two-level bins, the fold down center console/armrest is spacious inside, and the dashboard has large flat recessed areas for maps or eating a banquet in the cab. The high back, adjustable lumbar front seats are very comfortable. Leg and head room are outstanding. Even the center position is comfortable for large people on extended trips. The driving position is high with a commanding view of traffic. You feel like you're driving a big rig and it's easy to spot trouble ahead. For all its big rig qualities, the F-250 Super Duty rides and drives like a passenger car.
Our test truck was a Super Cab short bed 4x4 with the 6.8-liter Triton V10 engine, the very smooth electronic 4-speed automatic transmission, and the shift-on-the-fly 4x4 system. Horsepower is 275 with 410 lb-ft of torque. If you want more torque, you can get the optional 7.3-liter diesel with a whopping 500 lb-ft. The Triton V10 was very smooth and powerful. It seemed especially strong in the mid-range where most driving and towing are actually done.
We were very impressed with the F-250 as were all the people who saw it. Outside of the high step-in height and our objection to a 1999 model designation on a truck that was available in the third month of '98, we couldn't find anything to fault.
