What's New for the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer?
Nobody wanted a Lancer station wagon, even if it was called Sportback, so Mitsubishi kills it for 2005. Also gone is the LS trim level for the sedan. Remaining Lancer models are ES, OZ Rally, and Ralliart, and they all get free scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 45,000 miles. ES models gain standard equipment, and can be equipped with a Convenience package that includes color-keyed outside rearview mirrors, cruise control, and variable intermittent wipers. OZ Rally models get a new multi-spoke 15-inch alloy wheel design, and can be equipped with a Sun & Sound package with a sunroof, a 315-watt Infinity audio system, and side-impact airbags. Both OZ Rally and Ralliart can be equipped with the aptly named Rally package, with a cargo net, a scuff plate, and a fancy exhaust tip. What that has to do with rallying, we don’t know.

Advantages of the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer:

  • Impressive interior space
  • Comfortable seats
  • Quality materials and construction
  • Excellent brakes
  • Smooth ride quality (except Ralliart)
  • Easy to enter and exit the vehicle
  • Seven-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty
  • Free maintenance plan

Objections to the 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer:

  • Base 120-horsepower engine lacks verve
  • Standard wheels and tires on the ES are too small, resulting in sloppy handling

Editor's Advice:
The 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer is one of the best-kept secrets in the industry, a leading contender in the economy car segment especially now that free scheduled maintenance is part of the deal. In sporty Ralliart format it offers a legitimate alternative to the Ford Focus ST and Nissan Sentra SE-R, among others. Perhaps not surprising given that this platform serves as the bones of the amazing Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart is a blast to drive, providing impressive power, braking and handling. You can ignore the lame-duck OZ Rally trim – it does nothing for the car or your image. Better to stick with the standard-issue Lancer ES, which will make you wonder why people spend thousands more on other sedans.
