What's New for the 2004 Ford Thunderbird?
Unlike last year's infusion of horsepower, changes to the 2004 Ford Thunderbird are largely limited to trim and colors. New seats and interior trim debut on the Ford Thunderbird, and two new interior colors (Light Sand or Performance White) are available. Overhead lighting has been improved, a Homelink programmable transmitter has been added, and an Audiophile sound system with a six-disc in-dash CD changer is standard. New alloy wheel designs debut, the chrome chevron on the front fenders has been redesigned, and three new colors debut: Platinum Silver, Merlot and Vintage Green. They join Torch Red and Evening Black, which carry over from last year. Any 2004 Ford Thunderbird can have a new appearance package added, which includes a Light Sand top, Light Sand leather upholstery, bronze metallic dashboard trim and cream-colored gauges. Mid-year, a limited-edition Pacific Coast Roadster arrives wearing Monterey Mist Green paint, a Light Ash convertible top, a light/dark Ash two-tone leather interior with preferred suede inserts, and special wheels. Only 1,000 Pacific Coast Roadsters will be sold worldwide.

Advantages of the 2004 Ford Thunderbird:

  • Stout power from the 3.9-liter V8
  • Comfortable driving position and seating
  • Smooth ride
  • Classic styling

Objections to the 2004 Ford Thunderbird:

  • Bumps make the T-Bird wiggle
  • Wind buffeting at high speeds is unacceptable
  • Some cheap interior bits
  • Small trunk

Editor's Advice:
Sales of the Ford Thunderbird are in decline, incentives have been offered to move the car off of dealer lots, and the company has announced that it will kill the Thunderbird after 2005. Critics have written it off as a boulevard cruiser incapable of entertaining its driver, and consumers have inaccurately labeled it a "chick car." This is reality: the 2004 Ford Thunderbird is exactly the kind of car you want for a leisurely drive on a coastal or mountain road. It steers and handles quite well, if not to sports car standards. The V8 is powerful and sounds great. The retro styling captures positive attention, and three of the five available colors don't scream "chick." No, it's not going to hunt down and kill a BMW Z4 or Porsche Boxster. What it will do is allow you to concentrate on the finer points about driving a convertible, such as the wind in your hair, the smell of the ocean or forest, and enjoying the company of a good companion.
