 Detailed review:

I bought the Compass new 6 months ago and could not be happier, have already put over 17k miles on it. I work on a forest fire lookout up in the mountains and wanted something with just a little more clearance that would handle the rough roads but still be great for town & highway. Mine is a manual 5 speed and from the day I drove it off the lot consistently has gotten 27-30mpg, even on the mountain roads. It is ideal for someone who needs a moderate SUV that is a great all around car but also handles the bad roads. A lot of early reviews slammed the Compass saying it was not a real Jeep because it could not rock crawl. Baloney! This is a very affordable well built vehicle without a lot of unnecessary fluff and Jeep was smart to tap this market. Complaints about the interior were also exxagerated, comparing it to a Rubbermaid tote. Nonsense! Yes, the dash, door panels etc are a hard plastic, but it is tight, actually looks much better than just plastic and very easy to clean so even if you transport kids, pets, food, or go out in the woods you can wipe it off and keep it looking brand new. I drove a Plymouth Sundance for 16 years which stood up to the rough roads way better than many vehicles built for that; but I needed a little more clearance and 4x4. The Compass is perfect - handles and maneuvers as easily as the Sundance which is a small car, and since I was already used to a small car, the slightly bigger 2.4 litre engine provides plenty of power. It also gives a really nice smooth ride even on the rough mountain roads, and handles great in snow. Every oil change and checkup shows it in perfect condition though with 17k miles in 6 mos including rough roads, city, freeway, it has had way more than every use and responded well in every condition. No complaints or problems. It is also a great looking vehicle, I get many compliments (love the Marine Blue Pearl color!). Interior VERY comfortable and spacious. I like the slightly different styling, a refreshing change from the boring ugly square box look of almost every other SUV.
