2014 Chevrolet Spark EV Summary

About the 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV:

The new Spark EV is an electric version of Chevy’s surprisingly popular city car. It seats 4 people, offers 82 miles of range, and can be optioned for use with municipal DC Fast Chargers for a quicker pick-me-up when the owner is out running errands. It competes against the Fiat 500e and the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive.

Model Lineup:

Visual differences between the gasoline-powered Spark LT and the Spark EV aren’t exactly stark. The EV edition is equipped with different wheels, low-rolling resistance tires, active grille shutters, subtle aerodynamic modifications, and a charging port on the front left fender. Electric Blue and Titanium are unique colors to the Spark EV.

Inside, it is more obvious that the Spark EV is special, and not just because of the standard Electric Blue cloth seats. The 7-inch reconfigurable LCD gauge cluster is unique to the Spark EV, and includes an electric powertrain efficiency display and a confidence gauge showing how much battery range remains based on real-time assessments of driving style and conditions.

The standard Chevrolet MyLink system also displays specific information pertaining to the electric powertrain, and the Spark EV includes a 3-year subscription to OnStar telematics service and a RemoteLink Mobile App. Among the features offered through this smartphone application is a cabin pre-conditioning feature that heats or cools the cabin while the car is still connected to the electrical grid.

Otherwise, the Spark EV’s standard equipment list mirrors that of the standard Spark LT model.

Optional Equipment:

A 2LT Package adds Dark Pewter leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Options for models with the 2LT Package include DC Fast Charger compatibility and a Remote Stop Charge function. A 240-volt charging cord is available for any Spark EV.

Engines and Transmissions:

The Chevy Spark EV is equipped with an electric motor powered by a 21-kWh lithium ion battery pack. A single-speed transmission with Normal and Sport driving modes delivers 130 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque to the Spark EV’s front wheels, and a regenerative braking system helps to conserve battery charge. Driving range is estimated at 82 miles.

Fuel Economy Ratings:

Because it is an electric car, the Spark EV’s efficiency rating is expressed as Miles Per Gallon equivalent (MPGe). The EPA rates this model at 119 MPGe in combined driving.

Safety Ratings:

As this vehicle summary is written, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) have not performed crash tests on the Spark EV.

Technology Highlights:

There are three ways to recharge a Spark EV. Using the standard charging cord and a household electrical outlet, it takes 20 hours to recharge a drained battery. Equip your home with a 240-volt charging station and opt for the 240-volt charging cord, and a full battery is yours in about 7 hours. When equipped with DC Fast Charging equipment, the Spark EV achieves a full charge in about 30 minutes.
