Changes for the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu:
Two years after a complete redesign, and one year after a significant update, the Malibu midsize sedan gains OnStar 4G LTE connectivity complete with a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. The Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system is also improved, adding new Text Messaging Alerts and Siri Eyes Free capability. Otherwise, new colors are the only changes to the 2015 Malibu.
For 2015, the Malibu continues in LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels. When you upgrade to the LT model, the car includes better seat cloth, a Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth music streaming capability, heated exterior mirrors, and upgraded lighting, but it still rides on silly-looking 16-inch aluminum wheels that make the car look like it needs to go on a diet.
Choosing the 2LT package resolves that problem with a set of 18-inch wheels and fancy fog lights, while also adding an 8-way power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote vehicle starting, and more.
The upscale Malibu LTZ features premium trim inside and out, plus leather seats, unique wheels, and several additional upgrades.
Engines and Transmissions:
A 196-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with fuel-saving automatic stop/start technology is standard for all versions of the Malibu.
Choose the LT or LTZ, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is available, one making 259 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, with much of the torque available across a broad portion of the engine’s rev range for improved acceleration and responsiveness.
Both engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to the Malibu’s front wheels.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
In combined driving, the Malibu’s standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is EPA-rated to return 29 mpg. Get the optional turbocharged engine, and that figure falls to 24 mpg.
Every 2015 Chevy Malibu is equipped with 10 standard airbags as well as OnStar Automatic Crash Response service for the first 6 months of ownership. Automatic Crash Response automatically contacts rescue personnel when the car is involved in a crash that results in an airbag deployment. Optional safety-related features include a reversing camera, as well as Forward Collision Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Lane Departure Warning systems.
According to the NHTSA, the 2015 Malibu earns a 5-star rating for overall crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also finds the Malibu to be a safe car, naming it a “Top Safety Pick.” Unfortunately, for 2015, the Malibu loses the additional “Top Safety Pick+” designation because its Forward Collision Warning system offers only basic levels of front crash prevention.
The Malibu’s new OnStar 4G LTE service provides the sedan with a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot that supports up to 10 connected devices. Chevrolet offers a free 3-month/3GB trial to the service on Malibus that include the technology. Additionally, the available Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen infotainment system gains new Text Messaging Alerts and Siri Eyes Free capability for 2015.
