A full redesign for the midsize Chevrolet Malibu has been a long time coming. While the outgoing model was never really perceived as a dud, the stiff competition of the midsize market usually meant the Chevy model got lost in the shuffle. For 2012, the Malibu corrects many of the shortcomings that car shoppers maligned in the previous model. Keep reading to find out what's new on the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu so you can decide if it is the right vehicle for you.

Styling: 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

The first thing you're likely to notice about the new Malibu is that it is decidedly sportier. The square taillamps and muscular rear wheel bulges are reminiscent of the Camaro, and the boosted trunklid is similar in style to a BMW sedan. Combine these new features with carryovers such as the oversize Malibu split grille, and the result is a more stylish vehicle that isn't altogether unfamiliar.

Inside, shoppers may be glad to learn that the Malibu has grown in proportions. While the sporty design may give the appearance of a smaller vehicle, the truth is that interior space has increased by three cubic feet. This is partly thanks to an added width of 2.7 inches. The result is an interior that is similar in size to the Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry.

Changes have also been made to improve fuel efficiency through enhanced aerodynamics. Available features include front-end aeroshutters, efficient wheels, an eco gauge that helps maximize fuel savings and an overall design that helps reduce wind resistance.

Performance: 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

Chevy takes a cue from automakers such as Hyundai and Kia with the announcement that the Malibu will only be available with four-cylinder engines. The elimination of a V6 model hints at the vehicle's overall focus on efficiency. This point is further driven home by the fact that the 2013 Malibu Eco Hybrid trim will roll onto dealership lots a full six months before standard trim models.

The Malibu Eco comes with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that combines with an electric engine to promise 25 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway (according to Chevy). Thanks to the electric motor, the vehicle minimizes fuel use when the engine is idle.

Later in the year, a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine will also be available.

Pricing and Features: 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

The Chevrolet Malibu Eco is slated to come with a base MSRP of $25,995. As far as midsize hybrids go, this is figure undercuts most of the competition. However, it should also be noted that the Malibu falls a bit short of the fuel figures put up by hybrid competitors.

In terms of available features, Chevy promises a long list of high-tech amenities. This includes Chevrolet MyLink – a 7-inch color display system that allows you to wirelessly control smartphone and Bluetooh devices through voice commands or touch controls. MP3 players and USB devices can also be connected to the system. Other notable features that will be available on the 2013 Chevy Malibu include remote engine start, rearview camera, premium Pioneer stereo and OnStar technology.
