The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is General Motors' latest introduction to the automobile industry. Set for its fashion debut in October at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, the Chevrolet Cruze is an all-new compact car set for a global market. This car will be a core component to Chevrolet’s new line and will be available in Europe in the spring of 2009 as a 2010 model. Other global markets are expected to follow and eventually the Chevrolet Cruze will make it to the US.
This is one car that can be truly called global as it was developed by a design and engineering team from around the world and will have some parts produced in various locations across the globe. Some of the locations include Asia, Europe and a new assembly plant in Russia. For the rest, the vehicle is expected to be built at GM’s plant in Lordstown, Ohio.
The Cruze is a four-door five-passenger sedan that should please even the most discerning consumer. This vehicle may have started as a basic sedan but went through a dramatic interpretation before entering the market as a signature piece.
The Chevrolet Cruze is wider and longer than most others in its class, with the wheels relocated at the furthest outside edge of the sweeping framework. Solid yet racy, compact yet rakish, this vehicle offers the best of a coupe in a compact sedan.
Several notable design features include the shoulder line, two-tier grill, wrap around headlights, outside wheel design, interior twin cockpit, and the distinctive sculptured hood.
As far as fuel economy goes, according to Beth Lowery, GM’s vice president of environment, energy and safety policy during her talk at the Management Briefing Seminar in Traverse City, Michigan, the Cruze will get an extra nine miles per gallon versus the Cobalt that it is replacing. The EPA fuel economy rating for the Chevrolet Cobalt is 37 mpg. Add the additional 9 mpg to that makes easy mid-40s for the mpg range.
The Chevrolet Cobalt is being replaced with the new classy-looking Chevrolet Cruze. The cars are of a similar size, with the Cruze measuring an inch short of 16 feet long. According to GM, the cost issues involved in global production have them using a torsion beam rear suspension that’s been optimized for precision handling and smooth ride. This is also going to be the first of many new Chevrolet vehicles that use the revamped Delta 2 platform architecture.
The vehicle, at the European launch, will have either a 1.6 L 16-valve engine offering 112 horsepower or 1.8 L with 140 hp gas engine. Both have variable valve timing on the inlet and exhaust, which allows the engine to offer more power, less harmful emissions while improving the fuel economy. In the pipeline is a 2.0 L turbo diesel capable of producing 150 horsepower for even more power and better fuel economy. The transmissions to match these engines are a five-speed manual gearbox and an all-new automatic transmission. As the vehicle moves into other markets around the world, it’s expected that they will have engines specific to the regional markets.
In the front of the vehicle, there are oversized headlamps that sweep right around to the front of the car. Other features include the Chevrolet trademark two-tier grille and minimalist use of trim. This solid, smooth-looking vehicle offers bold styling to match the solid performance.
As one would expect from an introductory vehicle that is arriving with all the fanfare that this one is, the inside is smooth, distinctive and unforgettable. The Cruze chief designer Taewan Kim says, ‘We wanted to take a big step forward, making a strong design statement for Chevrolet products around the world.”
The inside features an interesting concept that uses a center console to separate the front area into separate and distinct spaces for the driver and the front passenger. A design borrowed from some of Chevrolet’s long line of performance cars.
There has been extensive use of quality materials. Taking full advantage of sensory touch by using grained surfaces, soft-to-the-touch materials, easy-on-the-eyes trim panels that all added to a serene and peaceful interior. This vehicle offers a full complement of driver experience.
Although some of the details are still sketchy, there is no doubt that the Chevrolet Cruze will be tops in available safety features. With the backing of a full team of global expertise, cutting edge design work and first-class quality, this vehicle is expected to achieve the highest possible scores in all the major crash safety ratings.
