As painful as it was to wait for the return of the Chevrolet Camaro in the United States, European fans of Chevy's muscle car had to wait even longer. After a decade off the market, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro marks its return to Europe with a slightly tweaked styling that might have some American customers jealous. There is no V-6 version of the Camaro in Europe, so all models - both coupe and convertible - will essentially be the 2SS trim level that is available here.

The biggest differences between the U.S. and European versions of the Chevy Camaro all take place at the rear of the car. The coolest new feature of the Euro-spec Camaro is the new taillight design that has a full LED display including brake lights, turn signals and, our favorite part, the backup lights. On the U.S. Camaro, small backup lights look like an afterthought positioned in the middle of the rear fascia, but the newly introduced European design does away with these rectangular lights giving the car's rear view a much cleaner look. These new LED taillights replace the four-pod lights on the North American version, and it helps to give this car a more modern appearance similar to the styling of the 2013 Ford Mustang. New reflectors are positioned above the dual exhaust outlets to further eliminate some of the dead space of the current design. The European Camaro also has noticeable larger side door mirrors that feature integrated LED turn signal indicators.

Like its U.S. counterpart, the European version of the Chevrolet Camaro will be decked out with the duo of V-8 engines offered in our Camaro SS model. The more powerful LS3 6.2-liter V-8 is mated to the manual transmission, while the L99 6.2-liter V-8 pairs with the automatic transmission and adds GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation system. The third-generation went out of production in 2002, but in returned for the 2010 model year in the U.S. European may have had to wait a couple extra years to get their hands on this iconic American muscle car, but we're sure there will be more than a few U.S. shoppers lusting after the new Euro-spec taillights.

"What we have created is a delicious blend of high-tech power, agility and efficiency wrapped in a stunning design. The Camaro has an iconic presence, unrivalled by competitors," said Susan Docherty, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe.
