The completely redesigned Chevrolet Avalanche features a significantly improved interior, responsive rack-and-pinion steering, a new fully-boxed frame, a new V8 engine family, and a restyled exterior. The result is a flexible, people-friendly truck that doubles as an SUV.

Model Mix

Thanks to a wide range of mechanical, safety and interior features, the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche offers many variations based on three separate models: the base LS, mid-priced LT and luxury LTZ trim levels. All come standard with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, a 5.3-liter V8 engine with Active Fuel Management technology and a four-speed automatic transmission.

Engines

Shoppers should take note that there are two 5.3-liter V8 engines: the flex-fuel variant that comes standard on rear-wheel-drive models, and the non-flex-fuel engine that comes standard on all-wheel-drive models. Later in the year, Chevrolet will introduce a 6.0-liter V8 engine upgrade for those who need more power.

LS Sticker Price

The Chevrolet Avalanche LS has a sticker price of $32,690, including the $900 destination charge. Added standard features include two front 12-volt outlets, keyless entry, a front split bench seat with six-way power adjustment for the driver’s side, a rear 60/40-split bench seat, a fold-down center armrest, cloth seats, steering wheel mounted audio and cruise controls, and a stereo with CD and MP3 players.

LTZ Sticker Price

At the top of the trim chain stands the Avalanche LTZ ($40,125) with all of the features from the LS and LT plus a side rail luggage rack, a heavy duty rear differential and 20-inch alloy wheels. For enthusiasts, GM is also making available the Avalanche Z71 Off-Road appearance package which sets the truck off with larger fog lamps, specific grille texturing and platinum chrome grille trim. Unique 18-inch wheels and tires are also part of the package.

Improvements

Improvements to the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche include a revised suspension, a stiffer frame, and a responsive rack-and-pinion steering system.

Nuts and Bolts

As a member of a new class of GM trucks, the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche gets a slew of upgraded mechanical features. Indeed, this is a thoroughly redesigned vehicle, featuring very little in common with the previous model. For starters, the rear-wheel-drive Avalanche is motivated by a new 5.3-liter V8 engine that makes 320 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 340 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm.

OnStar, Safety

Traction and safety equipment includes StabiliTrak stability control, which improves vehicle stability by comparing steering input with the vehicle’s actual path and takes corrective action through the brakes if necessary. Other safety features include available roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both rows of seats, and OnStar telematics with a free 12-month subscription to the Safe and Sound plan.

Design

A refined exterior design, along with significant interior improvements, adds a new level of sophistication to the 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche.

Inside

Open the door and prepare for an interior that wraps you in quality materials and improved fit-and-finish. Gauges are easy to see and understand, and displays are well-lit. It’s big inside, and comfortable, able to seat six in the Avalanche LS. Other changes to the interior include firm, well-bolstered seats, ample cargo room, and an upgraded climate control system. Also new and standard on the higher priced trims is a full-length side-curtain airbag system.

Midgate

As for the showpiece of the Avalanche – the removable midgate that transforms the truck from passenger hauler to cargo mauler – GM designers pretty much left it alone, as it takes only minutes to fold the rear seats flat and remove the back window to expand the cargo bed. Once converted, the Avalanche goes from an SUV with a 5-foot 3-inch truck bed to a pickup with a bed that’s almost eight feet in length. Waterproof storage compartments in the sides of the bed stay the same, though the 2007 model does feature a lockable rear tailgate. The Avalanche also features removable and partitioned hard plastic tonneau covers that can be individually locked into place.
