Today’s sport-utility vehicles put more emphasis than ever on the “sport” part of the equation, with automakers routinely delivering in excess of 500 hp in their latest hi-po SUVs. But just packing in the ponies wasn’t enough for victory in today’s Autobytel Auto Poll. Consider: The two entries with the highest horsepower numbers—the BMW X5 M (555 hp) and Mercedes GL63 AMG (550 hp)—were ranked four and five in terms of our readers’ favorite hot-rod SUVs. At the head of the class was the Porsche Cayenne Turbo with “only“ 500 horses but 31 percent of the vote, followed by the 470-hp Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 that was the preferred pick of 19 percent of the current survey respondents.
