The 2010 Ford Explorer is a rugged mid-size SUV that is in its final year of production as a full-fledged SUV. This makes 2010 the last model year for buyers to take advantage of the Ford Explorer's truck-based platform before it shifts over to a front-wheel drive crossover design in 2011. The Ford Explorer can handle as many as seven passengers when the available third row of accommodations is specified, and it additionally offers as much as 85 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats folded forward. Standard equipment on the Explorer includes an MP3-capable CD player, power windows and door locks, air conditioning and cruise control, while higher trim levels offer amenities such as dual automatic climate control, heated and perforated leather seats and the SYNC entertainment and communications interface.

The 2010 Ford Explorer starts out with a 4.0-liter V-6 engine that generates 210 horsepower and 254 lb-ft of torque. Fuel mileage for this engine is rated at 14 miles per gallon around town and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. A more robust 4.6-liter V-8 can also be had in the Explorer, and it upgrades output to 292 horses and 300 lb-ft of torque while maintaining the same city mileage and reducing highway mileage by only one mile per gallon. Four-wheel drive can be ordered on either edition of the SUV, and while the V-6 is matched with a five-speed automatic, the V-8 features a six-speed auto transmission.
