We round up the whole segment and give you the low-down on all the biggest brands' petite SUVs.
Introduction
Introduction
Compact SUVs/crossovers are red-hot in 2010. Drivers have identified the need to save fuel, but the prospect of tooling around in a low-slung, buzzy econobox just isn't appealing to many. This is how the compact SUV segment ignited. Take a compact car, raise it up, add an all-wheel drive option, a dose of utility and a dash of rugged styling, and you've got yourself one hot crossover contender. Leaving the luxury brands for another guide, we've collected 19 models in the Compact SUV/Crossover lineup (in alphabetical order) so you can visit all of the biggest brands' dealerships at your leisure.Photos courtesy of manufacturers.
Chevrolet Equinox
Five years ago, Chevrolet came onto the compact SUV scene with the Equinox. Now in 2010, the Equinox receives a much-needed makeover. Featuring a class-leading interior, powertrain and new exterior styling, you shouldn't purchase a compact SUV without at least considering the 2010 Equinox.

Honda CR-V
When buyers think of compact SUVs, most probably think of the CR-V. There's nothing wrong with that though, as the CR-V is the leader in terms of safety, utility, and value. Receiving a minor facelift, a power bump (to 180 horsepower), and a myriad of interior updates in 2010, Honda has ensured that the best selling SUV in America stays fresh and at the top of buyers' lists.

Hyundai Tucson
Hyundai is blazing ahead with its 24/7 product initiative which pledges 7 new models by the end of 2011, and the Tucson is the first result of that drive. Designed and engineered at Hyundai's Frankfurt-based design and technical centers, the new Tucson promises European design and refinement at Hyundai prices. The new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder under the hood supplies a much needed power bump, and Hyundai claims it should achieve a best-in-class 31 mpg on the highway.

Page 2
Jeep Compass
Barely an SUV, the Dodge Caliber-based Compass is Jeep's first crossover vehicle. A sub-par interior, noisy ride, and lackluster acceleration make Jeep's crossover less than competitive, though the low sticker price and decent fuel economy may appeal to shoppers on a budget.

Page 2
Jeep Liberty
The Jeep Liberty aims to embody the go anywhere, do anything sprit of, well, liberty. However, while the Liberty features enough hardware to get you virtually anywhere off road, its trail rated prowess is less than stellar on the road. The standard V6 is a bit underpowered, while the 4-speed automatic transmission translates to poor fuel economy and sub-standard interior materials ding this rugged off-roader.
MSRP: $23,255
Base Engine: 3.7-liter V6 with 210 horsepower
Base EPA mpg: 16 city/22 hwy/18 cmb

Page 2
Jeep Patriot
What its platform mate, the Jeep Compass, lacks in off-road ability, the Patriot makes up for with its trail rated badge. Though still not the best highway cruiser, the Patriot is a true entry-level Jeep. Priced very comparably to the Compass, the Patriot gets the nod for those who yearn for a good ol' fashioned trail ride without breaking the bank.

Kia Sportage
The offering from Kia boasts refinement and versatility for a price in the basement. The base 2.0-liter engine is a bit disappointing; offering power and fuel economy that trail the rest of the class. The option sheet is extensive though, and with its low base price, shoppers on a budget can spec out a very comfy Sportage at an even comfier price.

Mazda CX-7
Say you're looking for practicality, but not willing to give up fun. The Mazda CX-7 was designed just for you. The sporty-handling small crossover SUV from Mazda features an excellent mix of sports car and sport utility with an athletic design and peppy optional turbocharged engine. Not perfect though, the interior is a little sub-par and fuel economy, while acceptable, is not stellar.
MSRP: $21,550

Page 2
Mazda Tribute
The Tribute is kind of the black sheep in its zoom-zoom family. Slotted just below the more athletic CX-7, the Ford Escape-based Tribute features the Escape's engines, but misses out on key features such as SYNC, and its higher quality interior. 2010 adds an ambient temperature gauge on all trim levels and the Grand Touring trim is now equipped with a built-in garage door opener and back-up camera integrated in the rear-view mirror.

Page 2
Nissan Rogue
As far as compact crossover SUVs go, Nissan brings a very compelling offering to the table. The Rogue features a smooth, comfortable ride with a top-grade interior and competitive fuel economy. Cargo space can be at a premium for some larger items, and the lack of larger engine options puts it on the sluggish side. But considering price, the Rogue definitely belongs on your short list.
MSRP: $20,340
Base Engine: 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower
Base EPA mpg: 22 city/27 hwy/24 cmb
Model Highlights

Subaru Forester
In some conversations, Subaru could be credited with igniting the crossover SUV segment with its years of building all-wheel-drive station wagons. It is no surprise then that its designated crossover, the Forester, is among the top of its class. From its standard all-wheel-drive to its spacious versatile cabin, not to mention its comfortable ride, strong engines and excellent safety ratings, the Forester packs everything a crossover SUV buyer could ask for.
MSRP: $20,295
Base Engine: 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 170 horsepower
Base EPA mpg: 20 city/27 hwy/22 cmb
Model Highlights
Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive
Available turbocharged engine puts out 224 horsepower
IIHS Top Safety Pick
Page 2
Suzuki Grand Vitara
Unlike many road-focused crossovers, the Grand Vitara works best when the pavement runs out. That being said, the on-road experience can be a bit bouncy, but given its price, standard features, and lengthy warranty, a lot can be said for the compact SUV from Suzuki.
MSRP: $18,999

Page 2
Toyota RAV4
Solidly one of the top 20 best selling vehicles of 2009, the RAV4 is one of the most popular SUVs in this segment, and rightfully so. Cavernous cargo space and a flat load floor make it an excellent hauler, while the rare optional third-row seat provides extra space for young'ns. When optioned with the V6, the RAV4 rockets (relative to the segment) to 60 mph in under seven seconds but manages 27 mpg on the highway.
MSRP: $21,500
