I've always considered the stealthy silence to be one of the coolest aspects of both electric and hybrid vehicles; but I’m also not a good living example of the “safety first” motto. Fortunately for pedestrians in the European Union, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are concerned with preventing children, the elderly, and the visually impaired from being run over by a silent vehicle.
Under new rules issued by the EU, electric and hybrid vehicles are now required to generate noise from their engines, as reported by the BBC. Sound generators must be included in all new models of electric and hybrid vehicles by 2019, and all new electric and hybrid cars must emit noise by 2021.
MEPs also voted to decrease noise emission limits for vehicles by 25%.
