Cadillac, the American luxury automaker that developed the world's first V-16 engine and the world's worst cylinder deactivation technology, has never built a motor more powerful, or more sophisticated, than the supercharged, 4.4-liter Northstar V8 that resides under the hood of the new 2006 Cadillac STS-V. Developing 100 horsepower per liter, this new engine is capable of propelling the new 4,300-pound STS-V to 60 mph in less than five seconds. With 440 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 430 lb.-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm, the 2006 Cadillac STS-V's supercharged V8 engine is impressive, particularly when taking into account the fact that 90 percent of peak torque is available between 2,200 and 6,000 rpm.

Performance

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission equipped with Performance Algorithm Shifting (PAS) and Driver Shift Control. PAS allows the transmission to automatically determine and select the right gear when exiting a corner during aggressive driving, while DSC lets the driver manually choose gears by using the gear selector. Other highlights include larger vented-disc Brembo brakes, bigger wheels (18 inches up front and 19 inches in back), Pirelli Eufori run-flat tires (sized 255/45 in front and 270/40 in back), quicker steering, and a performance-tuned suspension engineered on Germany's famed Nurburgring racetrack. Despite the performance focus, however, Cadillac says that the STS-V is designed to provide both fantastic handling as well as a fantastic ride quality, like the best hot-rodded German sedans.

Panache

Outside, an upsized polished metal mesh grille, subtly bulging hood, ten-spoke aluminum wheels, lip spoiler, and rocker panel trim easily identify the 2006 Cadillac STS-V. Inside, the Cadillac STS-V receives suede seat inserts, leather upholstery sourced from the same company as the Maybach ultra-luxury sedan, unique Olive Ash burl wood trim, and special aluminum accents. Buyers may choose somewhat garish Tango Red lower dash, door, and seat insert décor if they desire. Equipped to take on segment leaders such as the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, the new STS-V has power, poise, and understated good looks. Best of all, this car possesses substance, a quality that until recently has been absent from Cadillacs. With the 2006 Cadillac STS-V, General Motors takes another leap toward making this once proud brand the "standard of the world."
