Buick makes substantial changes to the 2014 LaCrosse, from styling modifications and interior upgrades to a long list of new safety and infotainment technologies and a free scheduled maintenance plan. The one thing Buick didn’t fix? This car’s tiny trunk.
Buick sells the 2014 LaCrosse in a single level of specification with upgrade option packages called Leather, Premium I, Premium II, Touring, and Ultra Luxury Interior.
Predictably, the Leather package adds leather seats, as well as a power front passenger’s seat, a reversing camera, and rear parking sensors. The Premium I package includes perforated leather, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a premium sound system. The Premium II package provides navigation and 20-inch wheels, while the Touring package adds a real-time damping suspension with a Sport mode.
Engines and Transmissions:
Choose a standard LaCrosse or one equipped with the Leather Package, and this Buick is equipped with a standard eAssist powertrain, a “light electrification” system that uses a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and an electric assist motor powered by a small lithium-ion battery recharged by a regenerative braking system. Combined, this setup produces 182 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque, and drives the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The eAssist powertrain cannot power the vehicle solely on electricity. Rather, the battery and electric motor allow the use of a smaller, more fuel-efficient gasoline engine that doesn’t need to work as hard, thereby increasing fuel economy.
A 304-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine is optional for the base LaCrosse and the LaCrosse with Leather, and standard with Premium I, Premium II, Touring, and Ultra Luxury Interior option packages. The V-6 is paired with a 6-speed automatic, and is required for the optional all-wheel-drive system.
Fuel Economy Ratings:
Choose to stick with the eAssist “light electrification” powertrain, and the LaCrosse is rated to return 29 mpg in combined driving, according to the EPA. The V-6 engine delivers 21 mpg in combined driving, and the V-6/AWD combo produces 20 mpg.
Note, however, that with eAssist, the LaCrosse’s already small 13.3 cu.-ft. trunk shrinks further to 10.8 cu.-ft. in order to accommodate the battery pack. That’s about the same as two Miatas.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2014 LaCrosse a 5-star frontal impact rating and a 4-star rollover resistance rating. The LaCrosse has not been rated for side-impact protection as this summary is written. Likewise, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) had not rated the 2014 LaCrosse as this summary was published.
The 2014 LaCrosse is offered with a new version of Buick IntelliLink infotainment technology, which includes natural voice recognition and a gesture-recognition touchscreen.
