The 2015 Buick LaCrosse will help introduce the wonders of 4G LTE connectivity to the Tri-shield brand, making the technology standard for the next selling season; in fact, it will be standard on every Buick entry except for the 2015 Enclave three-row crossover, and that includes the 2015 Buick Regal, Buick Verano and Buick Encore. Then, the brand is reporting that "OnStar 4G LTE hardware will be in every Buick model by the 2016 model year."

Added Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick Marketing: “Today’s Buick lineup is full of technologies that help make our owners safer and more secure than they would be without them. With the introduction of high-speed OnStar 4G LTE, Buick owners will be better connected as well.”

That's because not only is the 4G LTE technology faster and more reliable than past in-car connectivity systems, but it also acts as a mobile wi-fi hotspot that can handle multiple devices from multiple users. As a further benefit, it will include the Buick AppShop, too, for access to smartphone-style apps.

Now, just to be clear here, while the 2015 Buick LaCrosse and friends will offer 4G connectivity as a complimentary feature, a separate, paid subscription will be required to actually use the service, and pricing for those data plans is still TBD. On the other hand, folks will have a choice of at least two service providers: OnStar partner AT&T will provide one solution, with the ability to integrate 4G Buicks into an owner's pre-existing Mobile Share plan, and customers also will be able to go directly through OnStar.

Speaking of which, Terry Inch, COO for GM's connectivity brand, noted that: “We are focused on constantly improving the OnStar service so that the system continues to remain a trusted value-add for GM customers. 4G LTE will enable the most powerful OnStar connection ever.”

Note: As a rough guide to how much 4G service could cost on a vehicle like the 2015 Buick LaCrosse, Audi—the first brand to announce 4G pricing—will launch the technology on the 2015 Audi A3 with a six-month, 5-gig data plan for $99, or a 30-month term, for $499, with up to 30 gigabytes of data.
