2014 Buick Encore Summary

Changes for the 2014 Buick Encore:

New safety options include Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, while the standard IntelliLink system adds Siri Eyes Free capability and text messaging support.

Model Lineup:

The 2014 Buick Encore is a small, upscale crossover SUV sold with standard equipment and a choice between Convenience, Leather, and Premium option packages.

Every Encore includes 18-inch aluminum wheels, cloth seats with leatherette trim, a power driver’s seat, heated exterior mirrors, ambient cabin lighting, and a fold-flat front passenger’s seat to carry long items when necessary. An IntelliLink infotainment system includes a 7-inch color touchscreen, satellite radio, a USB port, Bluetooth calling and audio streaming, and a reversing camera.

The Convenience Package adds dual-zone automatic climate control, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, remote engine starting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and fog lights. The Leather Package includes leather seats, a power front passenger’s seat, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Premium Package contains a premium sound system, front and rear park assist, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, rain-sensing wiper, a cargo net, and a cargo mat.

Additional options include chrome wheels, a navigation system, and a power sunroof.

Engines and Transmissions:

The Encore’s turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine makes 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque, the latter starting from 1,850 rpm to help make the SUV feel responsive. A 6-speed automatic transmission feeds power to the front wheels. All-wheel drive is optional.

Fuel Economy Ratings:

The standard Encore is rated to get 28 mpg in combined driving. With AWD, the rating drops to 26 mpg.

Safety Ratings:

If the Encore AWD gets worse gas mileage, it also gets slightly better crash-test scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With AWD, the overall rating is 5 stars. With FWD, the overall rating is 4 stars.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not finalized Encore crash-test ratings as this summary is written. Last year, the 2013 model received the highest rating of “Good” in all assessments except the new small overlap frontal impact test, in which the Encore received a “Poor” rating.

Technology Highlights:

Bose Active Noise Cancellation is standard for the Encore, using ceiling mounted microphones to detect audible engine noise and then generate counteracting sound waves through the sound system to “cancel” the noise.

OnStar telematics with Advanced Crash Response service is also standard, along with IntelliLink technology with Internet radio access, text-messaging capability, and, for iPhone users, Siri Eyes Free. Tune Select is included with the satellite radio service, allowing Encore owners to tag songs or artists and receive a notification when that song or artist is playing on any satellite radio station

Options include Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Alert, and Lane Departure Warning. Front and rear park assist sensors are available, as well as a RemoteLink mobile app and an opt-in OnStar service called FamilyLink that can provide vehicle location alerts.
