The luxury crossover market is now filling up with different sizes to meet a person’s needs. Whether you’re looking for something large or medium, most of the luxury manufacturers have you covered. If you have been looking for a small luxury crossover, there really wasn’t an option here in the U.S. Meanwhile in Europe, luxury automakers have introduced a number of small crossovers in the market and they are selling like hotcakes. BMW is the first automaker to introduce their small luxury crossover, the 2013 X1 to the states.

The BMW X1’s design can best describe as a BMW X3 just left in the wash a bit too long. Many of the design traits found the X3 such as the rear end styling and unique profile are all here in the X1. The X1’s interior is a bit of a timewarp. If you’re expecting one of BMW’s new and fresh interiors, be prepared for a shock since the X1 has the same interior as the last-generation 3-Series. But this isn’t a bad thing since it still looks fresh and BMW has made small changes here and there.

The X1 comes with the choice of two different engines; a 2.0L TwinPower turbocharged four-cylinder delivering 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.0L TwinPower turbocharged inline-six delivering 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2.0L can be equipped with rear (sDrive28i) or all-wheel drive (xDrive28i), while the 3.0L only comes in all-wheel drive (xDrive35i).

Fuel economy is rated at,

  • X1 sDrive28i: 24 City/34 Highway/28 Combined
  • X1 xDrive28i: 22 City/33 Highway/26 Combined
  • X1 xDrive35i: 19 City/26 Highway/21 Combined

A 2013 BMW X1 will set you back $30,800 for the base sDrive28i, $32,500 for the xDrive28i, and $38,600 for the xDrive35i. Competitors to the 2013 X1 include the Audi Q5, Buick Encore, and Mercedes-Benz GLK.
