Continuing its revised nomenclature theme of designating its two-door models with even numbers, the new BMW 2 Series Coupe is the replacement for the BMW 1 Series Coupe models, which ran from 2008 to 2013. The base 2 Series Coupe is the BMW 228i. Powered by a 240-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, the 228i places 255 ft-lbs of torque at its driver’s disposal. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment, a six-speed manual is also offered as a no cost option for the rear drive sport coupe.
Longer, wider and in possession of a wider track than the 1 Series Coupe it replaces, the BMW 228i offers more interior volume, more cargo capacity (13.8 cubic feet) and better handling. The look of the car, while obviously the “small” BMW coupe, is nevertheless more substantial than that of the 1 Series Coupe it replaces. In fact, the resemblance to the new 4 Series Coupe is quite remarkable. The nose is stretched, the rear wheel arches are quite pronounced and the greenhouse treatment is considerably ‘faster”. All in all, the new car looks considerably more sleek than the model it supplants.
The interior treatment, while classic BMW in its overall layout and presentation, is updated as well. Further, the 2 Series car is also more substantially equipped than the 1 Series. Standard equipment for the base 228i includes a set of seventeen-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, foglights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, cruise control, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat to improve cargo capacity, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, and BMW's iDrive monitored by a 6.5-inch video display. Bluetooth telephony and audio streaming are included, along with a ten-speaker audio system.
Two other trim packages are offered to enhance the base 228i model. The BMW Sport Line package includes a set of eighteen-inch light-alloy wheels, variable color ambient lighting, and special seat upholstery. The Sport Line package also features specific interior trim and key designs, along with a choice of wood or brushed aluminum trim. To spot a BMW Sport Line model from the outside, look for high-gloss black trim for the outer air intake surrounds, the front of the kidney grille bars, the cross rib in the center air intake, and the rear apron.
The M Sport option endows the 228i with a specific set of 18-inch wheels, aerodynamic tweaks, a more aggressively tuned and lowered suspension system, M Sport instrumentation, M Sport seats, and an M Sport dead pedal. For 2014, BMW 228i pricing starts at $32,100.
