As full-size trucks have improved their fuel economy ratings, and as some competitors have left the market, the number of smaller pickups for sale in America has dwindled to two: the Nissan Frontier and the Toyota Tacoma. General Motors knows that some people still want a smaller truck, and with the Frontier and Tacoma rapidly aging, the 2015 Colorado will be the most sophisticated and capable midsize pickup when it goes on sale near the end of 2014. Not only that, it makes Chevrolet the only brand to offer three different trucks for three different purposes. Well, it does until GMC announces a Canyon version.

What’s New for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado:

  • Totally new, based on global GM truck
  • Extended or crew cab body styles
  • Short or standard cargo beds with 2-tier loading
  • Standard 193-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine
  • Optional 302-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine
  • Turbo-diesel engine coming for 2016 model year
  • Tows up to 6,700 pounds
  • 4-wheel-disc brakes with 4-piston front calipers
  • Duralife brake rotors last twice as long
  • Free scheduled maintenance for 2 years/24,000 miles
  • Corner-step rear bumper design
  • Next-generation connectivity and infotainment
  • Optional forward collision and lane departure warning systems

New 2015 Chevrolet Colorado: Styling and Design

The new 2015 Chevy Colorado is based on GM’s global midsize pickup truck, but is equipped with a deeper cargo bed and styling unique to the American market. Looking similar to the larger Silverado in many respects, the new Colorado features active grille shutters to improve aerodynamics and fuel economy, triple-sealed doors inlaid to the vehicle’s sides for a quieter cabin, and a standard corner-step rear bumper design. The cargo bed includes 13 tie-down hooks and a two-tier loading design, one that accommodates an optional cargo management system that holds bicycles, kayaks, or other equipment above a bed packed with adventuring equipment.

Inside, the new 2015 Colorado takes its inspiration from the Silverado, and Chevrolet claims: “Colorado cabin designers paid exceptional attention to detail.” Equipped with generous in-cab storage and halo lighting for nighttime illumination of important controls, the Colorado has a floor shifter that separates the front seats, which include dual-firmness foam and stain-resistant fabric. Leather is offered as an option.

Buyers who choose the 2015 Chevy Colorado Z71 model will have a truck with a gunmetal gray grille, 17-inch aluminum wheels, projector beam headlights, and unique seat upholstery with exposed contrast stitching.

New 2015 Chevrolet Colorado: What’s Under the Hood

Initially, Colorado buyers can choose between two engines, each featuring direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. The standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is rated to generate 193 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, with 90 percent of maximum twist available from 2,000 rpm to 6,200 rpm. A 6-speed automatic transmission drives the rear wheels, and 4-wheel-drive is optional.

A 302-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engine is optional for the 2015 Colorado, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a Tow/Haul mode. It makes 270 lb.-ft. of torque, enough that the Colorado can tow up to 6,700 pounds when properly equipped, more than the competition.

Chevrolet also promises that the Colorado will supply class-leading payload capacity, and the best fuel-economy ratings of any midsize truck. That most certainly will be true for the 2016 model year, when the Colorado receives a new 2.8-liter Duramax 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine as an option.

Each engine includes two years or 24,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance, and the 2015 Colorado also includes 4-wheel-disc brakes with 4-piston front calipers and Duralife brake rotors designed to last twice as long as regular ones. The Colorado Z71 is equipped with an off-road suspension, an automatic locking rear differential, and hill descent control.

New 2015 Chevrolet Colorado: Features and Technology

Next-generation OnStar telematics is standard equipment for the 2015 Colorado, which is more refined and sophisticated than any small Chevy truck to come before it. Additionally, the Colorado LT and Z71 models offer a next-generation MyLink infotainment system with natural voice and gesture recognition technology, an 8-inch color touchscreen, text-messaging capability, multiple USB ports, Pandora Internet radio access, and Siri Eyes Free operation for drivers who own an iPhone.

The new Colorado can also be optioned with a navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system with dual viewing screens, a forward collision warning system, and a lane departure warning system.

New 2015 Chevrolet Colorado: What Autobytel Thinks

According to Chevrolet, people still want a truck that’s smaller than a full-size model. That’s probably true. It’s also probably true that midsize truck buyers want something newer and more modern than the Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. In a textbook example of going from zero to hero, the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado becomes the most sophisticated alternative to a full-size pickup truck, raising the bar for the competition whenever Nissan and Toyota get around to redesigning their trucks.
