With the all-new 2015 Audi A3 Sedan now on sale at U.S. dealerships, Audi's premium compact contender recently received a nice boost at the New York International Auto Show. That's where the A3 was honored as the 2014 World Car of the Year, marking the seventh time in the 10-year history of the awards program that an Audi has been honored. (Although, to be clear, that includes three recognitions for World Performance Car and a pair for World Car Design, in addition to another overall World Car title for the A6 in 2005.)

Said Rupert Stadler, chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG: "We are delighted that the Audi A3 has repeated that achievement by being voted 2014 World Car of the Year. The Audi A3 showcases Audi’s technical competence in all aspects of carmaking, not least in the areas of lightweight technology, drivetrain, mobile infotainment and driver assistance systems. This major award win is an achievement that the whole company can celebrate."

The annual World Car of the Year Awards are distinguished by their independent approach to the selection process, with voting carried out by a jury of 69 international automotive journalists from more than 20 different countries. About the 2015 Audi A3, that panel provided the following group verdict: “It might borrow styling hints from its bigger brothers, but the A3 still offers classic, chiseled contours and even better interior trim levels. With a superb choice of engines and four body styles, the A3 range packs a hefty premium punch in the small luxury segment. Audi should be complimented for making this A3 ride like no other A3. All the old shimmer over rough surfaces has gone, replaced by a silky smooth ride that approaches limousine quality."

As a reminder, the 2015 Audi A3 Sedan is leading the way in the United States, while the company is preparing a staggered rollout of the rest of the A3 family. Thus, over the next 18 months, U.S. customers can expect to see the 2015 Audi A3 Sedan joined by the open-air A3 Cabriolet, high-efficiency A3 Sedan TDI, performance-oriented S3 and a pair of A3 Sportback models. A plug-in hybrid version, with Audi's e-tron technology, already had been announced as arriving in this country next year, and the company also used the New York Auto Show to announce that it would offer a clean-diesel A3 Sportback TDI next summer for the 2016 model year.
